I always post my daily progress on my Facebook art page but trying to remember to update my wordpress is another story. So I am a bit late on this dolls progress because she is already completed however thought it would be interesting to do a quick post on the stages of my doll from beginning to completion.
Dolls are pretty time consuming (sketching/planning ideas, armatures, making the eyes, sculpting, cooking, layers of gesso, painting, varnishing, lots of waiting for things to dry, attaching the limbs for the jointed dolls, making the costumes, gluing in the hair, and all the other little details that go into it). It really works my nerves when someone asks if I can “lower the price” or “”omg why does she charge so much”. If only people could understand this, much like painting or any other art form, is a time consuming process, and also these are one of a kind pieces of art. If you want cheap, you can always go for mass produced.
This is my newest piece. I have lately been taking a small break from my jointed dolls to make a few standing sculpts. (but don’t worry, jointed ones coming back soon!) She is my representation of the grim reaper.
Less than 2 weeks left until A-kon and for once in my life I am almost done my costumes on time.
My main costume is Rydia from Final Fantasy iv. I have been wanting to do my own interpretation of her character for so many years now but never got around to it. After shopping at the $2 goodwill I happen to come across a beautiful green prom dress that I thought would be perfect to cut up and use for her corset and arm pieces. This gave me the motivation to finally bring Rydia to life. All the stars are handmade from scratch using tiny gold beads, hand cut fabric stars and gold trim. I also used star sequins and jewels that I painted gold. All the beads are hand stitched and painted from brown to gold. I still need to add gold trim to the leg pieces and a few other minor things and I will be finished Also the shoes are not quite the shoes I imagined for her but since it is summer I am having issues finding some good smaller boots that are the shape I like. I had these boots on hand so I will use as last resort in case I can’t find anything else. I have rub n buffed them from brown to gold and still need to add another layer to even them out.
This will be my last soft body doll for a little while. I will be starting back up on my full polymer clay sculpts.
Alice has been sold! You can follow my art page for more doll updates as well as my costumes.

I love making costumes as much as I love making dolls. Dressing up in costume has always been one of my favorite things to do and for some reason I have always been drawn to headpieces….very elaborate headpieces. I have only worked on a few headpieces so far and am still experimenting with methods and styles. My headpieces are by no means huge and elaborate ( like the ones I often drool over) but I hope in time they become much more involved.
Along with my dolls I hope to very soon start selling headpieces in my shop. Not only headpieces, but I would also like to focus on wings, chokers, arm pieces and many other types of costume pieces. Here are a few headpieces I have made:
(I did not make the white horn….that was made by the talented Firefly Path)
