Mermaid Art Dolls

Hello again! It’s been a while since my last post so time to catch up. Oops!! I have several  new dolls to share pictures of, as well as my Mardi Gras doll that was shown in the August/Sept/Oct edition of Art Doll Quarterly magazine (but I will save that for another post). I hope everyone has had a wonderful summer so far. Mine has been quite memorable.  My husband and I took a road trip through New Mexico, Arizona and California. I absolutely love the desert, mountains and our time relaxing on the beach. We also had a short mini vacation in Pensacola, FL. Being next to the water really gave me the inspiration to create a few mermaid pieces. (I believe I only sculpted two in my entire doll  making days.)

The purple girl has already been sold however you can find the other one in my Etsy shop.  She is currently my last remaining doll for sale. As always, layaway is available. Message me for details on how to split up your payments. 🙂

Her body is fabric stuffed with poly fill and her arms and face are sculpted in clay. She measures 24.5″ long and 12.5″ seated.

Follow my Facebook page for more of my dolls and WIP! Since Mardi Gras is almost here in the South, I decided to make a few fun dolls inspired by it. Pictures coming soon.

Stages of a doll

I always post my daily progress on my Facebook art page but trying to remember to update my wordpress is another story. So I am a bit late on this dolls progress because she is already completed however thought it would be interesting to do a quick post on the stages of my doll from beginning to completion.

Dolls are pretty time consuming (sketching/planning ideas, armatures, making the eyes, sculpting, cooking, layers of gesso, painting, varnishing, lots of waiting for things to dry, attaching the limbs for the jointed dolls, making the costumes, gluing in the hair, and all the other little details that go into it). It really works my nerves when someone asks if I can “lower the price” or “”omg why does she charge so much”. If only people could understand this, much like painting or any other art form, is a time consuming process, and also these are one of a kind pieces of art. If you want cheap, you can always go for mass produced.

This is my newest piece.  I have lately been taking a small break from my jointed dolls to make  a few standing sculpts. (but don’t worry, jointed ones coming  back soon!) She is my representation of the grim reaper.

Grim Reaper Art Doll

I am finally getting back to working on new dolls. Lately I have been so busy with commission costumes that I had to slow down on my sculpting but I am near completion on my last commission…..just in time to start some pieces for halloween (my favorite time of the year!)

My grim reaper  is now completed and for sale in my Etsy shop!  Like all my dolls, she is 100% handmade without use of any molds. I have hand sculpted all the little skulls and details on her head and chest.  I use cernit clay (which I have found is the strongest of all polymers) and she is built over a carefully constructed wire based armature. She is painted in acrylics, and varnished for color protection. She stand about 15″ high and is not posable. Her eyes were also handmade by me.

For more of my works please visit my art page where I love to share my progress of each doll.

Kitsune (fox spirit)

In mythology, Kitsune is a Japanese fox spirit also sometimes known as the nine tail fox. They possess magical abilities and often the number of tails they have will indicate how wise, old and powerful. They also have the ability to shape shift into human form, which is a concept I have always found inspiring. Like fairytales, mythology is something I grew up reading. Various trips to the library would result in a large pile of books focusing on Norse, Greek, Egyptian, Celtic and Asian mythologies. Japanese, in particular is one that always intrigued me. I have since been fascinated with Japanese culture, masks, costume, animation and theatre.

Instead of my normal ribbon jointed method, I decided to make this a standing sculpt so that I could place a lantern and japanese pipe (kiseru) in her hands. I also wanted to experiment with detailing the base which is something I have done in past sculpts and think I will continue in a new series of dolls.

She is now for sale in my Etsy shop. As always layaway is available.

Follow my art page for more pictures and updates on dolls.

Cake inspired art doll

I am a bit late on updating but my newest doll is for sale in my Etsy shop.  My original inspiration for her was a carousel but the more I worked on her the more she began to feel more like a cake or something sweet. She is my first doll of 2016. 🙂

She is one of my stuffed dolls so her body is fabric and her face, and arms are sculpted. She is lightly posable. She is approximately 26″ long. Everything is hand made from scratch and no molds ever used in my works so each one is truly unique.

Happy New Years

I am a little late, but Happy New Years to all. Hope 2016 is a productive year for everyone. Things have been a little slow moving on my end due to a lot of life changes going on but I plan for things  to pick up soon. Please follow my art page for more progress as I tend to update  much more than I do my blog.

Here is a doll I started a month ago and am finally now able to get back to. She is near completion and will be available for sale sometime next week.

Dark Elf Art Doll WIP

Every year around March/April I start to really get into cosplay mode, researching character inspiration, cosplay ideas and preparing for upcoming cons. I think that is why I felt the sudden urge to make a dark elf inspired character. In fact, I also have several other doll ideas inspired by some of my favorite characters. Currently I am working on a Rydia costume from Final Fantasy and have been dying to make a doll inspired by her.

I chose to experiment with a dark elf after finding some old scraps of leather I had plus I wanted to play around with painting an unusual skin color.  I also wanted to step out of my normal pattern and experiment with new ideas. I am absolutely loving this doll and having so much fun creating her.  I think the idea of cutting, painting and layering leather opens new possibilities for my future dolls and I definitely plan to try to make more elaborate pieces using this method.

If you enjoy my art dolls please show your support and follow my art page. I post daily updates and wip. You can also view more of my finished works.
